La historia de la química inorgánica es tan antigua como la historia de la humanidad. Las edades del progreso humano se nombran en términos de la química inorgánica: la Edad de Piedra, la Edad de Bronce, la Edad de Hierro y la Edad o Era Atómica. A comienzos del siglo XX Werner desarrolló la teoría de valencia primaria y valencia secundaria que condujo a la teoría moderna de la química de coordinación que emplea los conceptos de número de oxidación y número de coordinación respectivamente, aplicados a los metales de transición que los caracteriza por tener electrones de valencia
